Connecting the Dots: Assessing the Health Returns of Green Investment

Year Complete: 2017
Grant Amount: $75,000
Local Government: City of Louisville, KY
Local Foundation: Owsley Brown II Family Foundation

Project Purpose

To assess the impact of the natural environment on human health by implementing a neighborhood-scale greening plan in a socioeconomically and environmentally-deprived neighborhood.

Key Lessons Learned

Lessons learned about tools and tactics through the project that other sustainability directors could use to advance their work.

Visibility of the project was key.  To increase the chances of the project being understood and replicated, the project was converted into a documentary, a poster was created for the front yard of the school, and report card was developed for the health study participants, both to recognize their participation and to explain how this project prepared the project team to test the same thesis on a bigger scale.

Lessons for developing a collaborative process between a local government sustainability director and local place-based foundation(s).

Partnering with a university added validity to the work and allowed for significant follow up work.

Additional Information and Resources

This grant resulted from previous efforts (Round 2) to mitigate issues with urban heat islands in the Louisville area.  More information on these continuing efforts, including a grant to the University of Louisville, can be found here.
