Colleges are important anchor institutions that use their economic and other resources to create vibrant, inclusive communities. While their anchor activities often focus on local hiring and buying practices, they also serve an important role in educating residents for a 21st Century economy that increasingly requires post-secondary education to secure a family-sustaining career.

As more diverse populations enter college, entrenched racial, ethnic, and socio-economic equity gaps remain. Off-campus barriers, like inadequate public transit, are part of the problem. Critical partnerships between higher education and other public systems can help address these challenges, while generating wider community benefit, like more sustainable, equitable transit choices and increased ridership. Kresge’s Education Team funded partnerships to breakdown siloes between transit agencies and post secondary institutions in a range of cities.

This session will feature presentations from projects in Whittier, California and New Orleans, and engage the audience in a robust conversation about cross-sector partnerships that address students’ holistic needs and contribute to greater educational attainment, racial equity, and thriving communities.
